How Code releases work

The Office of the Law Revision Counsel (OLRC) of the U.S. House of Representatives prepares and publishes the official United States Code, incorporating new Public Laws enacted by Congress into statutory text.

Rather than publishing continuous updates with every individual bill, the OLRC publishes discrete release points. Each release point represents a comprehensive snapshot of the Code reflecting all Public Laws enacted through that point (for example, Public Law 118-45 denotes coverage through the 45th law of the 118th Congress).

Occasionally, an “except” note (such as except 260) indicates that a large or complex law enacted within that span was temporarily held out while being codified and incorporated in a subsequent release.
