# §6836. Support for voluntary building energy codes

- (a) **In general—** Not later than 1 year after October 24, 1992, the [Secretary](/usc/42/6832.md?p=10), after consulting with the [Secretary](/usc/42/6832.md?p=10) of [Housing](/usc/42/1490p–2.md?p=r-3) and Urban Development, the [Secretary](/usc/42/6832.md?p=10) of Veterans Affairs, other appropriate [Federal agencies](/usc/42/6832.md?p=5), [CABO](/usc/42/6832.md?p=15), [ASHRAE](/usc/42/6832.md?p=16), the National Conference of [States](/usc/42/6832.md?p=11) on [Building Codes](/usc/42/6832.md?p=3) and [Standards](/usc/42/1320d.md?p=7), and any other appropriate [building codes](/usc/42/6832.md?p=3) and [standards](/usc/42/1320d.md?p=7) organization, shall support the upgrading of [voluntary building energy codes](/usc/42/6832.md?p=14) for new residential and [commercial buildings](/usc/42/6832.md?p=4). Such support shall include—
  - (1) a compilation of data and other information regarding [building](/usc/42/6832.md?p=2) [energy efficiency](/usc/42/6291.md?p=5) [standards](/usc/42/1320d.md?p=7) and codes in the possession of the Federal Government, [State](/usc/42/6832.md?p=11) and [local governments](/usc/42/8401a.md), and industry organizations;
  - (2) assistance in improving the technical basis for such [standards](/usc/42/1320d.md?p=7) and codes;
  - (3) assistance in determining the cost-effectiveness and the technical feasibility of the [energy efficiency](/usc/42/6291.md?p=5) measures included in such [standards](/usc/42/1320d.md?p=7) and codes; and
  - (4) assistance in identifying appropriate measures with regard to radon and other indoor air [pollutants](/usc/42/1397h.md?p=c-4).
- (b) **Review—** The [Secretary](/usc/42/6832.md?p=10) shall periodically review the technical and economic basis of [voluntary building energy codes](/usc/42/6832.md?p=14) and, based upon ongoing research activities—
  - (1) recommend amendments to such codes including measures with regard to radon and other indoor air [pollutants](/usc/42/1397h.md?p=c-4);
  - (2) seek adoption of all technologically feasible and economically justified [energy efficiency](/usc/42/6291.md?p=5) measures; and
  - (3) otherwise participate in any industry process for review and [modification](/usc/42/7501.md?p=4) of such codes.
