# §13233. Data acquisition program

- (a) Not later than one year after October 24, 1992, the [Secretary](/usc/42/13201.md), through the [Energy](/usc/42/6311.md?p=7) Information Administration, and in cooperation with appropriate [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f), regional, and local authorities, shall establish a data collection [program](/usc/42/274l–1.md?p=4) to be conducted in at least 5 geographically and climatically diverse regions of the [United States](/usc/42/403.md?p=k) for the purpose of collecting data which would be useful to [persons](/usc/42/1320a–7k.md?p=d-4-C-i) seeking to [manufacture](/usc/42/300aa–33.md?p=3), convert, sell, own, or operate [alternative fueled vehicles](/usc/42/18831.md?p=a-1) or alternative fueling [facilities](/usc/42/11049.md?p=4). Such data shall include—
  - (1) identification of the number and types of [motor vehicle](/usc/42/13211.md?p=13) trips made daily and miles driven per trip, including commuting, business, and recreational trips;
  - (2) the projections of the [Secretary](/usc/42/13201.md) as to the most likely combination of [alternative fueled vehicle](/usc/42/18831.md?p=a-1) use and other forms of transit, including rail and other forms of mass transit;
  - (3) cost, performance, environmental, [energy](/usc/42/6311.md?p=7), and safety data on alternative fuels and [alternative fueled vehicles](/usc/42/18831.md?p=a-1); and
  - (4) other appropriate demographic information and consumer preferences.
- (b) The [Secretary](/usc/42/13201.md) shall consult with interested parties, including other appropriate Federal agencies, [manufacturers](/usc/42/300aa–33.md?p=3), public utilities, [owners](/usc/42/13641.md?p=4) and operators of fleets of [light duty motor vehicles](/usc/42/13211.md?p=11), and [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) or local governmental entities, to determine the types of data to be collected and analyzed under [subsection (a)](#a).
