# §12752. Distribution of assistance

- (a) **Local—** Each [participating jurisdiction](/usc/42/12704.md?p=4) shall, insofar as is feasible, distribute assistance under this part geographically within its boundaries and among different [categories](/usc/42/1395w–4.md?p=j-1) of [housing](/usc/42/1490p–2.md?p=r-3) need, according to the priorities of [housing](/usc/42/1490p–2.md?p=r-3) need identified in the jurisdiction’s approved [housing strategy](/usc/42/19504.md?p=a-3).
- (b) **State—** Participating [States](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) shall be responsible for distributing assistance throughout the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) according to the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f)’s assessment of the geographical distribution of the [housing](/usc/42/1490p–2.md?p=r-3) need within the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f), as identified in the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f)’s approved [housing strategy](/usc/42/19504.md?p=a-3). Participating [States](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) shall distribute assistance to rural areas in amounts that take into account the nonmetropolitan share of the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f)’s total population and objective measures of rural [housing](/usc/42/1490p–2.md?p=r-3) need, such as poverty and substandard [housing](/usc/42/1490p–2.md?p=r-3), as set forth in the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f)’s [housing strategy](/usc/42/19504.md?p=a-3) approved under [section 12705 of this title](/usc/42/12705.md). To the extent the need is within the boundaries of a participating [unit of general local government](/usc/42/803.md?p=g-10), the [State](/usc/42/201.md?p=f) and the [unit of general local government](/usc/42/803.md?p=g-10) shall coordinate activities to address that need.
