# §419a. Management practices to extend capacity and useful life of dredged material disposal areas


The [Secretary](/usc/33/426h–1.md?p=2) of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, shall utilize and encourage the utilization of such management practices as he determines appropriate to extend the capacity and useful life of dredged [material](/usc/33/1402.md?p=c) disposal areas such that the need for new dredged [material](/usc/33/1402.md?p=c) disposal areas is kept to a minimum. Management practices authorized by this section shall include, but not be limited to, the [construction](/usc/33/426e.md?p=c) of dikes, consolidation and dewatering of dredged [material](/usc/33/1402.md?p=c), and [construction](/usc/33/426e.md?p=c) of drainage and outflow facilities.
