# §3682. Assistant probation officers


To the maximum extent practicable, the chief judge or chief probation or pretrial services officer of each judicial district, in coordination with the [Office of Tribal Justice](/usc/25/3653.md?p=7) and the [Office](/usc/25/4001.md?p=4) of Justice Services, shall—

- (1) appoint individuals residing in [Indian](/usc/25/1934.md) country to serve as probation or pretrial services officers or assistants for purposes of monitoring and providing services to Federal prisoners residing in [Indian](/usc/25/1934.md) country; and
- (2) provide substance abuse, mental health, and other related treatment services to offenders residing on [Indian land](/usc/25/5702.md?p=5).
