# §2719d. Language incentive pay for civil service employees


The [Secretary](/usc/22/277d–43.md?p=5) may provide special monetary incentives to acquire or retain proficiency in [foreign](/usc/22/3146.md?p=1) languages to civil service [employees](/usc/22/4341.md?p=1) who serve in domestic positions requiring critical language skills that are located in the 50 [United States](/usc/22/1395.md?p=a-1), the District of Columbia, and non-[foreign](/usc/22/3146.md?p=1) areas (the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and other [United States](/usc/22/1395.md?p=a-1) territories and possessions). The amounts of such incentives should be similar to the language incentive pay provided to members of the [Foreign](/usc/22/3146.md?p=1) Service pursuant to [section 4024(b)(3) of this title](/usc/22/4024.md?p=b-3), as amended by section 5206.
