# §7914. Shooting ranges

- (a) **In general—** Except as provided in [subsection (b)](#b), the [Secretary concerned](/usc/16/7911.md?p=2) may, in accordance with this section and other applicable law, lease or permit the use of [Federal land](/usc/16/7911.md?p=1) for a shooting range.
- (b) **Exception—** The [Secretary concerned](/usc/16/7911.md?p=2) shall not lease or permit the use of [Federal land](/usc/16/7911.md?p=1) for a shooting range within—
  - (1) a component of the National Landscape [Conservation](/usc/16/6456.md?p=2) [System](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14);
  - (2) a component of the National [Wilderness](/usc/16/460mmm–1.md?p=6) Preservation [System](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14);
  - (3) any [area](/usc/16/539m–1.md?p=1-A) that is—
    - (A) designated as a [wilderness](/usc/16/460mmm–1.md?p=6) study [area](/usc/16/539m–1.md?p=1-A);
    - (B) administratively classified as—
      - (i) [wilderness](/usc/16/460mmm–1.md?p=6)-eligible; or
      - (ii) [wilderness](/usc/16/460mmm–1.md?p=6)-suitable; or
    - (C) a primitive or semiprimitive [area](/usc/16/539m–1.md?p=1-A);
  - (4) a national monument, national volcanic monument, or national [scenic area](/usc/16/460ffff.md?p=4); or
  - (5) a component of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers [System](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14) (including [areas](/usc/16/539m–1.md?p=1-A) designated for study for potential [addition](/usc/16/410r–5.md?p=c-2) to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers [System](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14)).
