# §1272. Congressional declaration of purpose


The purpose of this chapter is to implement the policy set out in [section 1271 of this title](/usc/16/1271.md) by instituting a national wild and scenic [rivers](/usc/16/1286.md?p=a) [system](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14), by designating the initial components of that [system](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14), and by prescribing the methods by which and standards according to which additional components may be added to the [system](/usc/16/668ee.md?p=14) from time to time.
